The game is based on the city building elements where player’s primary role is to build and maintain the colony of the eighteenth century in the New World. Settlement is what game encourages for. More the skills does player, more profound is the settlement in the Anno 1701. Similar to its predecessors, player here also colonizes unarmed country in the Anno Island. There are also pirates in the game. Player can defeat other players controlled by the computer in the game by using troops and lodge activities. Computer controlled rivals keep on strengthening themselves at the pace the Anno 1701 player advances.

The idea of Anno 1701 is very much like Age of Empires except the graphics quality. I don’t know whether the game is inspired from Age of Empires or not. Also Anno 1701 features more advance gameplay and lodge activities than Age of Empires. Colonization in the game passes through successive inhabitant levels. The order is Pioneers, Settlers, Citizens, Merchants and Aristocrats. In Anno 1701, Pioneers are the lowest inhabitants that rely on basic needs like food and shelter. And Aristocrats are the most luxurious inhabitants of the city. The game features five geographical cultures: Asians, Indians, Pirates, Aztecs and Iroquois.

An expansion pack Anno 1701: The Sunken Dragon was released on 25 October, 2007 by Sunflowers Interactive Entertainment. The expansion pack includes some new player profiles. Anno 1701 was received well by critics. The game proved to be more successful than Anno 1602 and Anno 1503.
